‘A reader lives a thousand lives…’
A few months ago I was scouring the internet for some inspirational quotes, as I sometimes do, and I came across this one and it has quickly become one of my all time favourite quotes. Last November I started reading the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series (and got into the show too but I won’t go into that now), and George quickly became one of my favourite authors. I wanted to write a post about it because I think it is so true.
I hate to see people on social media ‘bragging’ about the fact that they have never read a book in their lives because I just feel so sorry for them; they are missing out on so much. They don’t get to meet all these great characters and explore great worlds, whether they are in fantasy novels set in made up universes or in romance novels set in London. This is what this quote is saying; if you don’t read you only get to live in your own tiny section of the world, with the same people around you all the time, and you certainly can’t get to experience all the wonderful fictional worlds that once only existed in somebody else’s mind. Escaping from bad or mundane days can often be hard to do, but if you pick up a book you can get away without having to leave the comfort of your own home.
I feel quite sad, and ashamed to admit, that I did stop reading while I was at secondary school. This was partly because I couldn’t find the time (well, I thought I couldn’t find the time but I know now that I was wrong), and because in that kind of environment it wasn’t seen as ‘cool’ to read, (an English teacher telling us we had to read a certain classic was often met by a collective groan from the class). Nobody admitted to reading for pleasure so I just thought that nobody was doing it, even though I realise now that they probably were. Anyway, I picked up a book again when I started college and I’m so glad I did because now I realise how much I was missing out on. I hope I never lose interest in books again!
Oh, on the subject of ASOIAF/Game of Thrones, I met Kristian Nairn (Hodor) and Lena Headey (Cersei) last Saturday *cue fangirl screams*. Well, I didn’t exactly meet Kristian, I touched his arm as he walked in front of me while I was queuing for a ticket to get into Comic Con. I did meet Lena properly though; I hugged her, spoke to her and got a photo with her (which is now framed and takes pride of place on the mantlepiece). She’s so sweet and gorgeous, and I feel so honoured to have been able to meet such a lovely woman. The queues were mental so we got in late which means we didn’t get to meet anyone else but it was great all the same, and there’s always next year!
Anyway, I know not everyone is a fan so I’ll shut up about it now. However, I am interested to find any other quotes similar to this one, so if anyone has a particular favourite please feel free to leave a comment 🙂
